Swimming Pools
Everybody loves a swimming pool but nobody wants to become ill from the experience.
The disinfectant dosing system has to keep control of bacterial counts which happily feast on our perspiration, dead skin/hair, soap, shampoo, cosmetics, plus babies have accidents and little boys do what little boys do.
Operators are legally required to protect the health and safety of workers and pool users.
Part of their duty of care includes microbiological testing which must be undertaken each month for:
- TVC @ 37°C
- E.coli
- Coliforms
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Most operators check their Swimming Pool and Showers for Legionella every 3 months.
Advice on Taking the Sample

| Sampling should be taken with the pool in use, preferably when heavily loaded or immediately afterwards. The deep end is the best place, and away from inlets. | While the bottle is being plunged into the water it should be kept almost horizontal but with the neck pointing slightly upwards to avoid loss of the neutralising agent. Immerse 100-300mm below the pool surface and tilt upwards to allow it to fill. Once full, replace the cap and shake to disperse the neutraliser. |
