LEGIONELLA testing

Legionella Testing Requirements: Who Must Test in the UK?

Legionella bacteria can multiply in water systems and cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially serious form of pneumonia. Under UK health and safety legislation, employers, landlords and duty holders must identify, assess and manage Legionella risks.

Importantly, Legionella testing requirements UK do not mean routine microbiological testing is mandatory for every water system. However, testing is recommended where control measures may be ineffective, particularly in higher-risk environments or where risk assessments identify a need for monitoring.

Water systems should also be managed to minimise conditions that encourage Legionella growth, including keeping water temperatures outside the 20°C to 45°C range where possible.

Is Your Premises at Higher Risk?

✔ Care homes and healthcare facilities — support ongoing water safety management and CQC requirements

✔ Hospitals, GP surgeries and dental practices — protect patients, staff and visitors

✔ Commercial offices and industrial workplaces — support workplace health and safety responsibilities

✔ Swimming pools, spas and leisure centres — monitor higher-risk recreational water systems

✔ Residential landlords and multi-occupancy properties — help demonstrate that water system risks are being properly managed

At AquaCert, our Legionella testing kits make laboratory sampling straightforward when testing forms part of your risk management programme.

Receive Your Accredited Results and Certificate

Choose the appropriate Legionella water test kit and place your order online. Your kit includes sterile sample bottles and clear instructions explaining how to collect your sample correctly. Once you’re ready to take your sample, contact us at least 24 hours beforehand so the courier collection can be arranged. First arrange your courier collection with AquaCert. On the morning of your scheduled pickup, fill the supplied sterile bottle from the specified hot or cold water outlets, following the instructions provided with your kit. AquaCert arranges this courier collection for you, with the cost included in the testing service. Taking the samples on the morning of the collection ensures they reach the laboratory within the required timeframe to maintain UKAS testing conditions. Your sample is analysed by our UKAS-accredited laboratory. After routine Legionella testing UK, samples are cultured for the required period before the results can be confirmed. This is why the complete process typically takes around 14–18 days from sample collection to verified results.

You’ll receive a certificate of analysis by email, together with interpretation of the result and information about the level of risk, from us. Where Legionella is identified, we provide recommendations to help you reduce the risk.

Why UK Businesses Choose AquaCert for Legionella Testing Services

Clear Results and Certification

Your samples are processed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory using established laboratory procedures. HSE guidance recommends that where Legionella monitoring is appropriate, water samples should be tested by a UKAS-accredited laboratory participating in a suitable water microbiology proficiency testing scheme. There are no separate courier collection charges for our standard Legionella testing service. We use national courier arrangements to collect samples and deliver them to the laboratory. You receive a formal certificate of analysis rather than having to interpret complicated laboratory data yourself. Results are accompanied by information explaining the level of risk and, where appropriate, practical recommendations for reducing it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Legionella Testing

How often should you test for Legionella?
The minimum frequency for most systems is every six months, although Legionella testing may be more frequent in certain circumstances. HSE guidance similarly explains that testing frequency depends on the system and the outcome of the risk assessment. For open systems such as cooling towers and spa pools, routine testing should generally be carried out at least quarterly.
What does Legionella testing involve?
Our water testing kit contains sterile bottles and instructions for taking the required sample. You collect the water sample from the specified outlet, notify us so the courier can be arranged, and return the sample to the laboratory for analysis.

Our laboratory then cultures the sample and provides a certificate of analysis. If Legionella is detected, the results include information about the risk and recommendations for reducing it.

How long does Legionella testing take?
Although our Legionella testing kit can be ordered and the sample collected quickly, laboratory analysis takes longer because the sample must be cultured before the result can be confirmed. Samples are cultured for around 10–12 days, and the overall process can take approximately 14–18 days.
How much does Legionella testing cost?
The cost depends on the test kit and water system being tested. At AquaCert, our standard Legionella test is available to order online, with the current price displayed on the product page. The service includes laboratory analysis, the certificate of analysis, result interpretation and recommendations where appropriate.
What happens if my Legionella test is positive?
A positive result does not mean you are left to deal with the problem without guidance. At AquaCert, we provide interpretation of the results, explain the level of risk and offer recommendations for reducing that risk. We also carry out additional analysis to identify whether the strain is Legionella pneumophila.

Your next steps should be considered in the context of your overall Legionella risk assessment and water system. HSE guidance advises duty holders to assess the significance of results and take appropriate action based on the circumstances of the system.
